If political voting worked wonders, Belarus would get into finals more than that one time it did, and Russia would be a winner of Eurovison every year (this is the first time).
Some countries consistently send their best - like Dima - and some send Scooch'es and Andy Abraham's. England really shouldn't complain when it doesn't try hard enough. Dima is a huge star in Eastern Europe, so people would vote for him not because of the political affiliations, but because they know he is good and because they like his songs. Ukrainian and Georgian entries this year definitely were famous performers as well.
England has tons of good singers (I've been hooked on their music market for a while now), but they keep on sending mediocre performers. Now Germany did send a pretty famous band, but their performance was extremely weak. I was awfully disappointed because they were one of my favourites before I saw the final.
The disturbing thing is that Armenia, Ukraine and Greece came up with very similar in style songs and performed them in very similar skimpy outfits. And that's teh style that brought most votes combined.
Dima's entry was much more original by Eurovision standards w/ fairly complex lyrics (no "you're my lover, undercover"), and that thankfully worked.
I personally would love to see Serbia, Slovenia, Hungary and feel-good Iceland do better.
