A little story about me

Hi, I live in and love Latvia, and am interested in people, places, cultures and wonders of the world. I think, life can anytime turn out to be as short as the next moment, so I try to dive in the things I experience at present as deep as possible... Crazy photo amateur, whole-hearted opera fan, .. but above all, full of happy gratitude to God who makes me see how interesting life can be...
P.S. Do you know the meaning of my nickname "Nakupenda"? It's "I love you" in swahili language.:)

Favourite singers

Mariza, Elvis Presley, Coldplay, ABBA, opera music, etc... etc....:) very different, eh?:D

Hi Anna, yep been watching Eurovision (and otherwise very busy)...I'm pleased to say that I picked the first six as probable winners (but didn't necessarily get the right order...thought Belgium should have been placed higher) so overall a very satisfying contest for me (thought Sweden should have made the final though and still amazed that the hideously wonderful Ik Ben Verliefd didn't make it either....think I'll get over it though!! lol) How're things in Latvia these days?

Hi Annie, like your new look, it really does suit you :))...looking forward to the competition and I really do think the standard is probably the best ever. I agree with your comments (at least I think it was you) ref the Latvian song ...the first version I heard must have been from the national competion(having just won) so she was a bit emotional I suppose and definately off key but the official version was great...hope everything is going well in your world:)

I have noticed that many people like Armenian song.I think all of my fawourites has good chances to get in first 10. But i would like to say that Denmark has quite melodical song. I think The Danish entry is going to win Oslo 2010!!!
Have a nice weekend!
Reply from Anna:
Yes, usually Kristīne Zaharova is my favourite, too, everything is beautiful about her - voice, appearance... but this time I was not so fond of her song.. Anyway, let's hope she will do it next year!:)

Hello Anna It is nice to hear you!
At first I would like to say whwt i think about Eirodziesma 2010.Actually ,my favourite was Kristina Zaharova, she had a wounderfull song, she has a wounderfull voice ,you know.I like her perfomance`s. At the beggining i was quite sceptical-minded about her performance, but now deep inside i fell that she is not that bad, and could claim for good position, anway, better than last year.It was real shame for Us!
Regarding to thais years contest in Oslo my fawourites are Sweden,Denmark,Malta,Ireland,Slovakia,Macedonia(I hate that FYR )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN7LW0Y00kE
I really hope you have a nice Christmas holiday :)))))))
Reply from Anna:
:)))
When we sing carols here (usually in the church and also at home) we usually choose traditional Christian carols (Silent Night etc). But in Latvia popular are also other Christmas songs, for example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFQPc4EZsPc
(which is about a mother who sings a song to her child, they are very poor and starving, and mother says: "Hear, a little cricket is singing behind the stove, please don't ask for bread, my little one, we have nothing to eat at home, but forget it, look out through the window, see the stars in the sky, and the moon which shines the brightest for you, only for you..." (lyrics are by a Latvian poet a century ago, written during hard times in Latvia, and I guess presently the situation is pretty much similar in many homes). And another one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um94WkiyA0c
- a fragment from Latvian folk celebration of winter solstice (very traditional are mummery games with masks).

Thank you so much, dear Anna :))))))))))))))))) Do you know that all your happy trees are lit? I love this place :)

I say we improvise a "multicultural" Xmas, starting with sharing some traditional carols or Christmas songs from our countries. What do you think? :)
Here are two Romanian carols

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw_KJEH02_c (the orchestration is not the original one, but the lyrics are :)

Annie, if you don't mind, I'll take you on a very short trip to my childhood, 'cos that's the time when I could really feel the Christmas magic. It was as if I could touch it with my fingers, and that's something only a child can do :)

When I was little we used to have great Christmas parties, with at least twenty family members and friends coming together. I would be ecstatic about every little detail, the tree, the gifts, the smell of winter, all the attention I got :p (oh c'mon I was a kid!!).... Though there were several young people taking part at these family dinners, it was my grandparents and their siblings who set the tone for the party. I can still remember their laughs while telling stories, the games we played, the smell of food (though I always saved some place for desert! lol), the taste of cherry brandy (yeah, I KNOW I was too young to drink, but I only used to sip a tiny bit... it was the only time I was allowed to! lol), but what I absolutely LOVED about these parties was when "the elders" started singing carols and old Romanian songs. That's how I learned all the lyrics to several such songs by heart and, well, the joy of living as well (their joy was simply infectious; I think I've never met such cheerful people in my life). To give you an idea of the overall atmosphere, here's some of the songs we used to sing on such occasions:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLhNBkJx4Tc (it is about a man who's riding a horse drawn sleigh to get to his sweetheart's place on a winter evening; he doesn't mind the snow and the cold as long as he can reach her :))))))))))))))))))))

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JrPK3-gfP4 (very similar to the first one :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hocO4aU53GY (an ode to wine :))))))))))))

and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6T8XKnMPug (a girl's "invitation" to Ionel, her lover, to visit her at night, when her mom is asleep; did our grandmothers know how to have fun or what? :p :))))))))))))))))

It's awfully nice to listen to these tunes again. I haven't listened to them in quite a while... They take me to a very happy place :) I can still remember my grandma's smile while I was singing them (completely out of tune!). So this is dedicated to her memory.

Anna, I hope you enjoyed the trip as much as I did.
Cheers! :)

Indeed, I'm a real tree fan myself :) probably that's why, after putting my little plastic tree up this year (much earlier than usual: when I was a kid, we used to put the tree up only on Xmas Eve), I thought something was missing... at first I thought it was the smell of pine trees, but then I realized it had nothing to do with it :)

'Said one oyster to a neighboring oyster, “I have a very great pain within me. It is heavy and round and I am in distress.”

And the other oyster replied with haughty complacence, “Praise be to the heavens and to the sea, I have no pain within me. I am well and whole both within and without.”

At that moment a crab was passing by and heard the two oysters, and he said to the one who was well and whole both within and without, “Yes, you are well and whole; but the pain that your neighbor bears is a pearl of exceeding beauty.” '

Annie, though we’ve only known each other for a few months, it feels as if we’d laughed, cried and smiled together for a lifetime.

To thank you for the unique chance of entering your wonderful world, my gift for you today is not a Happy Birthday song, but a ride to a deeper level of my soul. We’ll do that through music and the departing point will be The Great Bridge, of course :)

Anna, what is Renars singing about in your picture?
Reply from Anna:
So, I translated from the Latvian version of the song:

You chose to stay

When all things are said...
Will it ever be such?
We’ll make our way further,
All the routine will crash.
It’ll happen one day
When the speed of light beam
Will be slower than thoughts,
Thoughts and spirit of yours.

He promised to forget,
She - not to forgive,
You chose to stay,
I - fly away.
And who’ll be the first one,
And who – the last of us?
It doesn’t matter, really,
You’re mine and I’m yours.

The Universe so small,
But large is buttonhole,
The sad one is joyful,
Dreams - sweetest of all.
It’ll happen one day
When the speed of light beam
Will be slower than thoughts,
Thoughts and spirit of yours.

When all things are said...
And it’s certain to be!
We’ll make our way further,
And crash the routine.
And who’ll be the first one,
And who – the last of us?
It doesn’t matter, really
You’re mine and I’m yours.

Oh, Anna, Fab is right it was beautiful... to have real friends is more wonderful than anything else, but to have an imaginary one is quite a different thing...it's only yours, your own secret, I think it must be great...never experienced anything like that...though at times I become my own friend(sometimes it even happens that I become my own enemy too), I ask myself for advice, I confort myself...and I guess it's something similar...you have a beautiful soul...

Beautiful blog, Anny :)) It has inspired me to do some thinking (I lied to Paul. I actually do that every now and then :p). So here's what I've come up with:

- I envy you. I don't recall having had an imaginary friend when I was a kid. A pity, cos I see the two of you were having some great conversations!!! Is it too late, or can I have one right now???

- As we know, shit happens. As we know, mountains of pain exist in real life. As we know, many people get crushed under them. As we know, the ones that survive get rewarded by receiving supernatural powers. They can tell important things from less important ones. They can fully understand the meaning and necessity of joy. They can understand pain and help. And I can fly a broom!

- What does 'moving mountains in real life' mean? People tell me I'm a genius, and should lead a freakin empire, instead of settling for an average job and paycheck. They don't get it. don't understand that doesn't matter shit. don't see money, power, and social status are not the most important things in the world. They weren't there today when I returned home, and listened to viva la vida out loud, my windows were wide open, and all of a sudden an incredible number of different birds landed nearby and began a concert of their own. They don't know how beautiful it can be to notice things like that.

- After growing up, people are so busy moving unimportant mountains, that they stop having dreams and playing. That's why I think wonderlands and playgrounds should be compulsory. Especially for grown-ups!

Reply from Anna:
As to music playing skills, it's never too late u see...:) Maybe now simply it is not the right period? I also tried to learn to play guitar when I was about your age. I quit unlearned... but now, watching my son's enthusiasm I've resumed, even with some success..:D But I really do wish you succeed in anything you desire much sooner.:)) And many other things you think you have to improve will settle with time.. you are demanding towards yourself, and it is good.

By the way what's your favourite ABBA song(s)? The ones I have a great fondnest for are 'When I Kissed The Teacher' and 'Ring Ring' because they remind me of when I was a young soldier in Germany in the mid 70's. We played them all the time. Funny isn't it, technically speaking you were on the 'other side' then. Please don't let my sense of humour get me into trouble! Hey why don't you put some of your 'crazy photos on the blog now and then, Latvia looks really nice and it's the home of my latest 'best band' Prata Vetra. Hey there, I don't mean to brag, but hello from extremely hot and sunny Mexico... it's been the hottest (and longest) "summer" in a very long time... see, the thing is that in Mexico, actual summer is plagued with rain, so our hor season is spring... rain normally starts at the beginning of June, only this year it's comming a bit late, I guess, and it's just a living hell here. I can't say I complain much, since I love hot weather, but being trapped in the office when you see the sun shinning as I'm seeing it now it's just really painful!!!
Cheers!!

well, it's a matter of personal taste. I mean their song is not exactly in my favorite category, and that's a category I prefer not to talk about unless I see smth utterly unusual or spectacular. And last night I didn't notice anything extraordinary about their performance. The song is certainly catchy, and by comparison to many others, it's like a breath of fresh air, but I'd say it's rather average if you check out the details. However, I'm sure it will get a very good ranking in the final.
P.S. What I noticed about Sakis was the Superman-taking-off move in his dance routine :))))))

strictly about their performance last night: poor male, very average female vocals; often off key; average dance routine. All in all, Aysel's pretty and I loved her bracelets. now it's your turn

here's what actually happens. Almost every day I get inspired by people, music, books and all kinds of everyday stuff. So I usually get an idea seemingly out of the blue and begin playing with it in my mind. When a concept takes form, I set to writing and all the words and ideas fall into place. After I'm done, I read what I wrote, and, if I like it, I publish it. However, I never think that someone else will actually read, let alone like it. Therefore, when I receive such positive feedbacks from wonderful bright persons like you, it simply brings joy to my heart. That's why my LOVE and RESPECT go to you, my friend.

Hi Anna
I welcome you as a friend and look forward to chatting to you.
I have just returned from Australia after visiting my son and his family, who all live in the Sunshine State of Queensland on the Gold Coast.
I have only had one chance so far to watch the Preview Videos of each of this year's songs. My favourite at the moment is Ireland, but that might change when I listen to the songs over and over again.
I am not sure about your country's entry yet. I will have to listen to it again before I decide.
I will let you know what my top 10 favourites are a little later. At the moment I have 17 that I like and 3 that I am not sure about.
What are your favourites so far ???
Hope to hear from you soon.

I havent heard all the songs of Eurovision 2009, and i havent decided my favourite one i am going to vote for jet, anyway, i will make my final decision in Live broadcastings from the venue in Moscow.Swedish song is good and interesting very serious like Molitva, aolso maltese song performed by chiara is nice, i truely recomend you to listen to shes entry in Kyiv that was great.By the way i realise that both of us we speak native Latvian but i dont know why we communicate in english i think its so coool, isn`t it?as to Intras Bussulis his song isnt the best one what could get the ticket to moscow and represent Latvia ,anyway, i will cross my fingers on the 14th of May hoping Latvia will qualify to final.Natalia`s Dynamite was my favourite of our National selection.Have a nice upcoming celebration`s!Māris
Reply from Anna:
Oh, I like the Swedish song, too, since I am also a great opera fan, and I watches some other videos with Malena in youtube as well. My favorite in Latvia's selection was Kristine Zaharova, I like ballads (when they are not too many and too monotonous) and Kristine's voice is fascinating. But of course I will also hope for the best during the semi-final in May. Forši, ka te runājam angliski, because it is only polite in this public space towards the audience of Eurovision fans who may read this. So that they nedomā, ka mēs viņus aprunājam.:) Priecīgas Lieldienas Tev arī!:)

Reply from Anna:
Hey hey, Onil (or better Rodriguez?:)! Nice to meet you, too, and I chose my nickname already several years ago, not just for this site.. I am writing poems and essays, in Latvian (they appear only in some Internet sites), and once I decided I must have a well-sounding, and "poetic" nickname. Then I found a list in Internet with phrases in different languages, you know, e.g. "I love you" in 100 languages, or other such phrases. And so I searched in the list of "I love you", which phrase would speak to me. I read them aloud and imagined myself on a pedestal.LOL :) And then "Nakupenda" = "I love you" in swahili emerged and stayed as The One. :)
