The semifinals of the Finnish pre-selection are over and in a little over a week, we’ll have a winner! Here are my thoughts about the acts that did not make it through to the final.

Automatic Eye – I’m Not the One Who’s Sorry

Here is my tip for the lead vocalist: stop pointing your finger and try to sing in tune! This performance was a mess. The lead singer wasn’t very charismatic and the other members didn’t get to be on camera that much. They may do well on their gigs but they have a lot to learn when it comes to performing on TV.

Jonna – Puppets

I don’t think there was anything really wrong with this performance. Jonna had clearly thought about the show aspect of Eurovision, some say even too much with the dress change and everything. I agree that the dress change was maybe a little unnecessary but the outfits were both cute so no harm done. There might have been few dancers too many for a stage that size which resulted in the dancers not getting much attention at all in the performance. There was not much to complain about Jonna’s vocals either. I guess the only downfall of the performance was simply not being popular enough.

Soma Manuchar – Strong

Well this was weird! I know her outfit was designed by a well known Finnish designer but still… That pantyhose/diamond-bikini thing just didn’t look that good. Despite its name I never thought the song itself was that strong and the performance only highlighted its weaknesses. Soma’s vocals were off especially in the lower parts. I wish her all the best on her career but I’m glad that her Eurovision journey is over.

Jimi Constantine – Party to Party

This performance really made me feel uneasy. The second the music started I was worried what Jimi was going to do next. His performance was overly confident considering what it looked like. Singing was in second place the whole time and that is not right when it comes to Eurovision. The talking, champagne bottle, the fake money (which, by the way, had his face on it) and finally taking the shirt off, it was all just too much. I know this performance splits opinnions, one of the friends I was watching the show with actually voted for this! As you might have guessed I didn’t like this at all and I have to admit that I laughed very malicously when this didn’t get through to the final...

Tommi Soidinmäki – Seis!

The main thing I think was wrong with this performance was that the song is bad. The lyrics are quite terrible and the awful disco beat just makes it that much worse. The costumes were quite nice. Tommi, however, looked a little scary with his mad grin. I really liked the talented dancers in the background but they didn’t get to be on camera that much.

Overall I think this year the semifinals went quite well. Even the songs that I didn’t like but I thought would surely get through to the final, didn’t. The only one I would have liked to see in the final was Jonna. I think the final on 12.2 is as strong as it could be and I’m really hoping we choose the best possible song for Düsseldorf as I will be rooting for it on 10.5 in the arena.
