I'm a huge Eurovision fan, but I sadly can't watch it on TV because I live in Canada. However, I've been listening to the songs on the internet, and these are my top five favourites - and reasons why I love them!
1. Turkey
Last year, I liked Turkey's song, Dum Tek Tek. It was a nice, catchy song that made me feel like dancing - even when I may be the worst dancer in the whole world. No matter. So, Turkey's song this year automatically caught me, when I first saw the first second of the music video. Barbed wire and gas masks? I like. <3 the song itself is just so.. I have no idea what it is, but I love it. The dulcimer [or whatever instrument that was in the background] makes the song so interesting. I absolutely love how it's a nu-metal band, but the verses are rapped. I really, really hope Turkey wins this year, or at least gets far. It's the most memorable song.. for me, anyways.
2. Lithuania
I'm a huge, huge fan of ska music, and these guys are really just amazing. The amount of energy they seem to put into their performances is just astonishing. They seem like really funny guys, the kind of people I'd like to just sit and chill with for a bit. I absolutely love the beginning with the kazoos and it catches my attention right off of the bat. The chorus is super catchy and I often find myself humming it absentmindedly. Hopefully Lithuania will make it far as well this year, though I'm not sure if others will like this song as much as I do.
3. Armenia
This entry sort of took me by surprise, I'm not going to lie. I never thought I was going to like Armenia's song very much the first time I heard it, but now I can't stop listening to it. It's grown on me for sure. Though her accent is very thick, her singing voice is absolutely stunning. One day I wish I could sing as well as Eva, she's simply amazing.. I really can't express in words how much I adore her singing. The song itself has a strong meaning and a catchy beat to it after the first verse. Her voice is clear and pure and this song is definitely another of my favourites.
4. Belgium
Oh. my lord. This is another song that took me by surprise. I generally dislike Belgium as a country (thanks to a tv show, silly reason, I know), but this singer, Tom Dice, he's great. This was the first song I heard out of all of the 2010 songs, and I think I just sorta pushed it aside.. but now I realize how much I love it. His voice reminds me of a mix of John Mayer and Jason Mraz. This is the kind of song that I'd like to listen to while laying on the grass and staring up at the clouds on a sunny day. It's just so light-hearted and happy.
5. Israel
I don't know what he's singing about, but his voice is amazing.. and he's not too hard on the eyes either. ;D The song itself is a haunting piano ballad, and his voice just suits it so well. I'm tempted to find a translator online just to understand what he's singing about, but this really is an amazing song. It's so sad, and Harel has a great talent within him - well, I guess not even within, he's just really flipping talented.
my other favourites include Cyprus, Norway, Poland, Germany, Slovakia, Spain, and Serbia.
Next blog I'll write about my bottom 5 - the songs that I really, really don't like.
