And so, it is finally sinking in to me that Jedward are representing the Emerald Isle in Dusseldorf this May. The quiff-clad duo, from Lucan/Leamhcán, just outside the capital city Dublin/Baile Átha Cliath, are going to be performing 'Lipstick' in the second semi-final on the 12th.
John and Edward Grimes were born on the 16th of October 1991 and from their first breath stood out from the crowd. After their antics on British talent search The X Factor, where they finished sixth, they had a relative degree of musical success, but more so on television, with Jedward Let Loose on British ITV and OMG! It's Jedward on RTÉ Two. Their 2010 album, 'Planet Jedward', featured their cover of US rock band Blink 182's 'All the Small Things'. After a series of TV advertising campaigns they won Eurosong 2011 {the Irish national selection} on 11 February, beating Nikki Kavanagh {a backing singer with Niamh Kavanagh in Oslo last year} by two points through a combination of televote and regional juries.
Word on the street is that Jedward are a farce. Also that Jedward could win the contest outright for Ireland for the first time since Oslo 1996, something that sends shivers down my spine. I have personally told myself the folowing: 'Ireland won't win the ESC this year because of the EU/IMF bailout received by the Irish government in November 2010, but we'll never win the ESC again because of Jedward'.
By the way, Athlone girl Donna McCaul, who with her brother Joe represented Ireland in Kiev 2005 with the song 'Love?', is going to be a backup singer with Malta's entry Glen Vella.
Any comments that you feel are desired are welcome. Best wishes, Bernard.
