Of Mexican, German and Yugoslav descents, I was born in the United States suns and moons ago. I am what I am, except a straight man. Take me as I am or leave me just as you found me. I speak pidgin bits of any language that has come across my path: Italian, Hebrew, Serbo-Croatian, Greek, and French. It is commonly normal to me since I was raised in a bilingual house where there is (or rather was) this belief that no jail in the world is worse than ignorance and no worst enemy than an ignorant. Life itself has taught me that each person is a book and each street a school. Not to mention that the Eurovision Song Contest has been playing a big part in my language education. On the other hand, foreign language motion pictures are of my personal interest, but a gay-themed indie has the same effect on me as much as those silents and classics. It is, however, the Eurovision Song Contest which has had a much deeper impact on me since childhood.
One evening in early 1983, I turned the tele on and, voilà, the Eurovision Song Contest was taking place in München, Westdeutschland. Only a child, yet I was instantly attractred by all the strange languages that were being spoken and sung throughout the live broadcast. The late Israeli legend Ofra Haza still is in my mind. Not to mention "Främling", the Swedish song entry by none other than Carola in her first ever ESC appearance. "Hajde da lujemo" performed by Tajči still brings memories from a nation which no longer exists: Yugoslavia.
From that moment on until 1989, I was hooked to the song contest year after year. I remember still the Italian entries were top favourites of mine. Johnny Logan's second win was as boring to me as that of Céline Dion, but both songs have a place in my heart nowadays. Needless to say, it would take 15 long years before I was able to watch the ESC once again; that of 2004 in Istanbul. How come? Well, the Eurovision Song Contest is not broadcast neither live nor previously recorded anywhere in the Americas.
I AM the DOVE (of hope), the EAGLE (that sees everything), the SPIDER (that weaves everything), the SERPENT (of both envy and vengeance), the SCORPION (of venom that kills itself rather than surrender). ¡VIVA LA DIVA!
