And the wait begins again
Posted 3/Jun at 01:58 By Rodrigo Romero
A few days have passed since Eurovisoin 2010 ended. I didn't quite finished my reviews since, for some reason, I just couldn't log in to the page in the previous days to the contest. I tried every day since I arrived in Europe, and just couldn't do it. So, even if I missed three countries to review, here are my thoughts of this year's edition.
The winner
Germany was a hot favourite all the way long. Many didn't think that they could actually overcome the power of diaspora and friendly vote, and yet lovely Lena managed to conquer the hearts of all Europe. A well deserved victory for a long waiting country, which will take us all back to Germany next year. The song was hip, fresh, Lena is simply amazing, and watching her perform just a couple of metres away from me was simply fantastic.
My favourite
Without a doubt, Tom Dice, from Belgium. The song was simply fantastic, he peformed perfectly, he managed to somehow bring Belgium back to the final, and to take them to the sixth position for that matter. Hats off to Tom, you have a big fan in Mexico.
All about the fun.
I had the privilege of meeting two really amazing crouds. The Moldovan guys and the Cypriot guys, and I must say that both are just fun machines. The first, all energy, certaily brought a special something to Oslo. The second, witty and always straightforward, simply amazing to talk to.
The one who deserved a better song.
Josh from the UK. Talking to that guy in person really made you want him to score a bit more than he did. He's such a down to earth guy, straightforward, easy to talk to, always kind, and with a big smile on his face. Too bad his song wasn't really what he deserved.
The freaking diva.
Eva Rivas from Armenia... simply a pain in the ass.
The seat stealers.
Guys from Azerbaijan, in particular someone really close to Safura, were sitting in my seats when I arrived to the second semifinal, and were pretty upset when I dared move them.
The mystery.
Whatever happened to Iceland, I cannot understand. I mean, the ovation she received in the arena most certainly didn't reflect on the scoreboard. She certainly warmed our hearts, and her song became a great hit at Euroclub, one which no one stopped dancing to.
The mystery bis.
Israel. They were hot favourites, the press centre just gave ovations every time he rehearsed, he topped the fan vote of OGAE, and yet, he drowned in the final. Sure, he made more than one mistake during the live show, but did he really deserve such a terrible punishment.
The assault.
What happened to Spain was simply outrageous. At least EBU stood up and gave them a second chance. In the end, the outcome might have been positive for Daniel.
The indignation.
Huge booing went on in the arena whenever an obvious vote swapping happened. This pretty much caused every 12 points given to Russia to be received by a boo, as happened with Cyprus and Greece, and others. Surprisingly, the 12 points from Portugal to Spain were received with applause.
The hope.
We finally saw EBU's efforts to bring a voting system which was more fair crowned. Germany's victory brought back to many the faith that the contest can actually be won by a great song, no matter where it comes from. So, we have hope that our loved contest has finally returned to be what it should always have been... a song contest.
I'll try to post some more in the couple of days, although it may not be as easy as I'd like, since I decided to take advantage of crossing the ocean to actually travel a bit more around. For now, that's all of me. The wait for Germany 2011 begins. I hope we'll keep readin each other, and never forget that, in the end, what we all love about ESC is that for just one night we could be the same, no matter what they say
